So last night I was driving the e36 and the heat decided to stop working after a particularly bumpy section of the road..... damn... So I pulled over in a parking lot to find the top radiator hose had decided it had irreconcilable differences with the radiator. Luckily I had tools in the trunk, so I got them back together and refilled the system.

Do you think its time for just new hoses? Or should I get a new radiator as well?

(not my car)

Most likely time for new hoses... Do they feel soft when you press them? If so, new hoses. And both.

Hoses, thermostat, buy some constant tension clamps, your going to want to check the radiator to make sure the inlet and outlet tubes are not broken, then you will need to bleed out the system, otherwise, you will get air bubbles and the pump will cavitate and your engine will overheat and die.

I bled out the system with the bleed screw last night. I am getting strong heat now. Is there any further bleeding to do? Hoses and clamps are on the list, now a thermostat is too.

Give it another go until no air at all escapes, make sure you have the front end elevated and the heat on high when you do it.

Yeah, thats what I did. I was parked on an incline. Ran the car for a bit, then bled it again. I will check again after work after I've run it for a bit.... On another note Made a shopping cart on ECS tuning for cooling and some new springs. It's amazing how fast it gets up past $1000.

radiator, hoses, thermostat, thermostat housing, mounting brackets, ... you know what: all this is what I'm looking at. I'm probably going to wait a bit. maybe a month.

Damn, son. If my radiator breaks again, I'll be getting one of those.

What do you have now? I thought you were the person who told me to go all aluminum.

Stock, because I needed a new one right then for cheap, then it broke but was under warranty so I got a new one for free. I don't have any faith in it at all though, and if I had the option, I would go all aluminum.

To be honest, it's probably not a bad idea to get a better radiator if you can. The cooling is one of the flaws of the E36, although I haven't done enough research to tell you how bad of a flaw it is. I've just heard it said.

yeah, I am looking at a lot of new parts. One of these days the list of things to fix will get shorter instead of longer.
